Six year old Isaac officially opened Nerrols Primary School today (5th September), by cutting the ribbon and helping to welcome everyone in. The new primary’s eldest pupil was the first to step foot inside the school in Nerrols Drive, Taunton, which took a year to build and was ready just in time for the new term.
The Head Teacher Rhian Locker said: “Isaac was great, the scissors were a bit of a struggle but he made it! It was so lovely to see all our pupils looking smart in their new uniforms, they were all so excited and had a lovely first day. Opening the school on time has been a challenge and a privilege to be part of and it was just wonderful to see it all come together today.”
Mrs Locker and her team have been working until late in the night over past week to get the school ready, after they were officially handed over the site by the construction company. She added: “Yes, it was a very busy weekend! Luckily I have some amazing new members of staff and we’ve all worked hard to make sure all was in place so the children could have a wonderful welcome.”
After the ribbon cutting, the new pupils had a teddy bears’ picnic in the dining hall before meeting their new teachers and viewing their classrooms. Nerrols currently has 39 pupils in Reception,Year 1 and Year 2 but will eventually grow to 420 as each year’s intake is added. In the meantime those pupils will benefit from an all weather 3G sports pitch, main hall with kitchen, science and technology room, cookery room, indoor and outdoor play areas and a nature habitat.
The nursery will be open 49 weeks of the year between 8am and 6pm, offering breakfast and tea for children, as it is self contained with its own entrance. It currently has 24 two and three year olds on its books. The rooms include a nap area with ‘sleepy teepees’, where the little ones can rest during the day.
The new Nursery Manager Andrea Bolton said: “We are gradually introducing the children with some ‘stay and play’ dates, before we properly open next week. Our aim is to make sure it’s not an overwhelming experience for them and that they get to know us and the nursery in their own time. Judging by how happy today’s little visitors were, it won’t take long!”
